A Hongkonger’s Impressive Humanitarian Work

08/05/2017

War in Syria. Saving hostages from the Taliban. Working under gunfire. We may feel far removed from such experiences, but Mr. Jason Yip, Program Manager at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), faces these challenges in his work.

Established in 1863, the ICRC is an impartial, neutral and independent organisation dedicated to protecting the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other violent situations. It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles. As the only member of ICRC from Hong Kong working in conflict zones, Jason has spent five years in Palestine, Afghanistan and Myanmar as an ICRC delegate, developing and implementing humanitarian initiatives. On 7 April, Jason spoke to alumni during a seminar titled “A Hongkonger in Global Humanitarian Work,” which was organised by the BBA Alumni Association as part of the Round the Globe Series.

During the hour-long seminar, Jason presented a picture of humanitarians working on the frontline. He spoke about the ICRC’s mandate and mission as well as its various projects around the world. Attendees were particularly interested in hearing about his experience dealing with governments and militants, including the US military and Afghani Taliban, as he sought to protect people in Asia and the Middle East. The audience was also impressed by the dangers he faced during emergency relief efforts after Sichuan’s 2008 earthquake and the Andaman Sea migrant crisis in 2015.

“I join Jason in wishing for a better world for people to live in. I am glad that all of our alumni in attendance were impressed by his unusual adventures, and gained a better understanding of the meaningful humanitarian work he does,” said Mr. Raymond Lo, President of the BBA Alumni Association.
